Ageing skin, fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process. There is a variety of factors that contribute to their formation. Some examples include cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss, continual muscular contraction, and external factors, such as sun damage and smoking.

Botulinum toxin injections are used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It smooths out frown lines between the eyebrows, laughter lines around the eyes, as well as creases in the forehead. Botulinum Toxin has been used in within the cosmetic industry for over 20 years.

The medication is administered by injection and works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that signals muscles to move, therefore relaxing, and preventing the contraction of the facial muscles that lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Despite commonly being used to treat existing lines, botulinum toxin is most effective when used as a preventative treatment. Relaxing the target area and preventing ‘dynamic wrinkles’ (those that only appear on muscular movement), will reduce and prevent the permanent formation of deep, ‘static lines’ (those that are continuously present).

Results can be seen within 3-4 days following the procedure and continue to improve in the week or two following, lasting up to 4 months. There is minimal down time following your treatment, therefor you can continue your day as normal.

Forehead Lines

Forehead lines, vertical furrows across the forehead, are caused by the frontalis muscle. As the eyebrows are raised, this muscle contracts to cause wrinkles above the brow. A variety of factors can make these wrinkles worse, including genetics, age, and smoking.

Your Consultation

At your initial appointment, we conduct a comprehensive medical history and

assessment to ensure anti- wrinkle injections are appropriate for you. We discuss, if applicable, alternatives with you and encourage you to ask any questions and discuss any concerns you may have.

We will then put together a treatment plan with you, outlining costs upfront, ensuring the recommended treatment plan is within budget. We shall then ask you to read and sign a consent form for the anti- wrinkle treatment. Finally, prior to treatment we shall consult with our Doctor via video conference, this shall enable us to acquire a prescription for the administration of product, this prescription shall then be valid for 12months should you wish to receive further treatments.

We begin by marking the injection sites based on our analysis, an aseptic technique is then utilised and injections administered.

You may experience superficial bruising/tenderness at the injection sites for

several days afterwards but this should not be excessive and clients are generally

able to drive themselves home after the appointment (although we do

encourage you to sit and rest for a few minutes first).

Appointment time shall vary subject to the number of areas being treated. Please allow at least 45minutes for the initial consultation.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea.

What is the most important information you should know about botulinum toxin products?

Spread of Toxin Effects:

In some cases, the effects of botulinum toxin products may affect areas of the body away from the injection site. Symptoms can happen hours to weeks after injection and may include swallowing and breathing problems, loss of strength and muscle weakness all over the body, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids. Swallowing and breathing problems can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. You are at the highest risk if these problems are pre-existing before injection.

These effects could make it unsafe for you to drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities.

Do not have botulinum toxin treatment if you:

Are allergic to or have had an allergic reaction to any botulinum toxin products, are allergic to cow’s milk protein, have a skin infection at the planned injection site, under 18 years of age, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not have botulinum toxin treatment if you:

Have swallowing or breathing difficulties or you have muscle or nerve conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, which may increase the risk of serious side effects including difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing.

Advise your cosmetic injector of all of your medical conditions, including, if you have surgical changes to your face, very weak muscles in the treatment area, any abnormal facial change, injection site inflammation, droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds, deep facial scars, thick oily skin, wrinkles that can’t be smoothed by spreading them apart, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant or breastfeed.

Tell your cosmetic injector about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal and other natural products. Using botulinum toxin with certain other medicines may cause serious side effects. Do not start any new medicines whilst using botulinum toxin without talking to your doctor first.

Especially tell your cosmetic injector if you:

Have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months or any in the past.
