Marionette folds and lines are creases that extend vertically from the corners of your mouth to your chin. The marionette lines stem from the muscles used to pull the mouth in articulation of speech and smiling. Volume loss in the face can also effect the formation of the marionette lines.

As we age, the facial fat pads located in the cheeks and midface area gradually lose volume and descend due to gravity and changes in collagen and elastin production. This loss of volume and support can contribute to the deepening of marionette lines as the skin sags and folds around the mouth area.

Changes in bone structure, particularly in the jaw and chin area, can also impact the development of marionette lines. Bone resorption and changes in bone density can alter the contours of the lower face, contributing to the formation of deep creases and folds around the mouth and chin.
