A gummy smile, also known as excessive gingival display, occurs when a person's smile shows an excessive amount of their gum tissue, often resulting in a higher-than-usual proportion of gums to teeth.

The position and size of the teeth and the gums play a significant role in a gummy smile. Factors such as the length of the upper lip, the size and shape of the teeth, the position of the jaw, and the amount of gum tissue that is visible when smiling can all contribute to the appearance of a gummy smile.

The movement and muscle activity of the upper lip when smiling can affect the amount of gum tissue that is exposed. Hyperactivity of the muscles that control the upper lip, such as the levator labii superioris and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscles, can cause the upper lip to lift higher than usual, revealing more of the gums.
