What causes acne, congestion and enlarged pores?
Acne and congestion usually develop from a combination of factors:
Excess oil:
Overactive oil glands, often driven by hormones.
Clogged pores:
Dead skin and oil blocking the follicle.
Bacteria and inflammation:
Contributing to breakouts, redness and swelling.
Hormonal changes:
Puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy and stress.
Genetics:
Pore size and oiliness are largely inherited.
Skincare and diet:
Product choices and diet can both contribute.
Understanding your skin
Acne is rarely caused by one thing, which is why one product rarely fixes it. Hormones, oil production, bacteria, genetics, stress, diet, sleep and the skincare you're using all play a part, and the mix is different for everyone.
That's why a consultation looks at the whole picture, not just the breakouts. We'll talk through what your skin is doing and when, what you're currently using on it, and the factors in your life that might be contributing. Often there are small changes - to skincare, routine or habits, that make a real difference alongside any treatment.
It's also worth knowing that some acne needs medical management first. If we think that's the case for you, we'll say so and point you in the right direction, our treatments can work alongside medical care where appropriate.
Areas we can help with
breakouts & congestion
Blackheads, whiteheads and blocked pores.
Congestion happens when oil and dead skin cells block the pore. If the blockage stays open to the air it oxidises into a blackhead; if it's closed over, it forms a whitehead. Both are early-stage acne and often appear on the nose, chin and forehead where oil glands are most active.
oily & combination skin
Excess shine and recurring congestion.
Oily skin is driven by overactive sebaceous glands, usually influenced by hormones and genetics. Combination skin has an oily T-zone with normal or dry cheeks. Both tend to congest easily, which is why breakouts often recur in the same areas.
post-breakout marks
Dark or red marks left after a breakout heals.
These are not true scars. Red marks are lingering inflammation, and brown marks are excess pigment triggered by the breakout, more common in darker skin tones. Both usually fade over time but can be slow to resolve.
enlarged pores
More visible pores on the nose, cheeks and forehead.
Pore size is mostly genetic, but pores can appear larger when they're stretched by oil and debris, or when the surrounding skin loses firmness with age. They're most noticeable across the T-zone, where oil production is highest.
acne scarring & texture
Marks and unevenness left after breakouts.
Acne scarring forms when inflammation damages the deeper skin and it heals with either too little tissue (pitted scars) or too much (raised scars). Deeper, longer-lasting or picked breakouts are more likely to scar.
adult & hormonal acne
Breakouts continuing or starting beyond the teenage years.
Adult acne is common, particularly in women, and is often hormonal, flaring around the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or perimenopause. It tends to appear along the jawline, chin and lower face, and can start for the first time in the twenties, thirties or later.
What to expect at your consultation
An acne consultation looks at more than the breakouts themselves. Your nurse will take a full medical history - including any medications, hormonal factors and previous treatments - and assess your skin type, the kind of acne you have, and where and when it flares.
We'll talk through your current skincare routine and the lifestyle factors that may be contributing, and discuss whether your acne would benefit from medical management alongside anything we offer. From there, we'll create a personalised plan that may include in-clinic treatment, skincare adjustments, or both.
Options and costs are always discussed in person at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions
What causes adult and hormonal acne?
+
Acne isn't just a teenage concern. Hormonal shifts, stress, genetics and skincare all play a role, and breakouts can continue or start well into adulthood. A consultation helps identify what's driving yours.
Does diet cause acne?
+
For some people, certain foods, particularly high-sugar and some dairy can contribute to breakouts, though the link varies a lot between individuals. Diet is one factor among several, and your nurse will discuss it as part of the bigger picture.
Do I need to see a GP first?
+
Not necessarily, but for moderate to severe or persistent acne, medical management from a GP or dermatologist may be the right first step. If that's the case, your nurse will let you know at your consultation. Our treatments can work alongside medical care where appropriate.
Can you help with acne scarring?
+
Several of our treatments may help improve the appearance of acne scarring and uneven texture. The right option depends on the type of scarring, which is assessed at your consultation.
How many treatments will I need?
+
This varies from person to person and depends on your skin and goals. Your nurse will talk you through a realistic plan.
Can treatment make my skin worse before it gets better?
+
Some resurfacing treatments can cause a short adjustment period as the skin renews. Your nurse will explain what to expect and how to care for your skin.
