Sclerotherapy

TREATMENTS

Sclerotherapy is a long-used procedure for spider veins and thread veins on the legs - the fine red, blue or purple surface veins many people find bothersome. It's performed in clinic with a very fine needle, and most people can walk straight afterwards, with some activities restricted for a short time. Treated veins may fade gradually over the following weeks, and results vary.

Understanding sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy has been used to treat leg veins for decades. On the day, your nurse assesses the veins with you standing, then treats each one with a very fine needle. Some discomfort is common, often a sting or cramping and a session typically takes 30–45 minutes.

Afterwards, compression stockings are worn for a period your nurse will advise, and walking is encouraged. Treated veins may fade gradually over weeks to months, and larger clusters may need more than one session. Common side effects include bruising, tenderness and temporary darkening at the treated site; rarer risks are explained at your consultation.

Sclerotherapy is used on the legs and body, not the face - facial capillaries are assessed for laser-based options instead.

What to expect at your consultation

Your nurse will assess the veins with you standing and lying down, and check for any signs of varicose veins or underlying venous problems, if present, a vascular assessment is recommended before any cosmetic treatment. A full medical history is taken, including any history of blood clots, clotting disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and current medications, as these affect suitability.

We'll talk through what's involved, how many sessions you're likely to need, aftercare including compression, and costs. If sclerotherapy isn't right for you, we'll say so.

Note: All cosmetic procedures carry risks, and results vary between individuals. Your nurse will explain these in full before any treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is sclerotherapy?

+

A long-used procedure for spider and thread veins on the legs, performed with a very fine needle in clinic. Treated veins may gradually fade over the following weeks to months, and results vary.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

+

Some discomfort is common, usually described as a sting or brief cramping as each vein is treated. Your nurse will discuss what to expect.

What aftercare is involved?

+

Compression stockings are worn for a period afterwards, and walking is encouraged. Hot baths, saunas, strenuous exercise and sun exposure on the treated area are avoided for a short time. Your nurse will give you full guidance.

How many sessions will I need?

+

This depends on the number and size of veins, some people need one session, others two or three spaced several weeks apart. Your nurse will outline a realistic plan.

What are the side effects?

+

Common side effects include bruising, tenderness, and temporary darkening or fine red matting at the treated site, which usually settle over weeks. Rarer, more serious risks exist and are explained in full at your consultation.

Will the veins come back?

+

Treated veins typically don't return, though this can't be guaranteed, and new spider veins can develop over time - particularly if the underlying causes are ongoing.
